WORKSHOPS & PANELS
Kari is in frequent demand at various conferences to present
workshops and as an invited panelist and moderator. Her
style is informal and fun, yet packed with strategic tips,
information, and stories that illustrate her points. Her
participation on panels is frequently interactive with attendees,
tailoring her talking points to those who attend her workshops
to get the most out of their session(s) together. The workshops
below have either been presented in Kari’s own workshop
series or at The International Folk Alliance, IBMA and Americana
Conferences over the years.
The workshops that Kari offers in her four-part series or
separately are:
Booking 101 – What you really need to know
Kari’s general workshop survey of booking, soup to
nuts! Not only does Kari give artists a primer on the elements
& insider booking tips from the venue’s perspective,
but Kari defines the interrelationships on how negotiating,
releasing a new CD, touring, publicity and radio are interrelated.
Kari also explores efficient techniques and practices that
make the use of an artist’s time and resources. As
editor of the best selling independent book,
“How to Be Your Own Booking Agent....”
this workshop has had attendees in standing room only at
The Americana Conference in Nashville and at packed rooms
at other conference presentations.
Promotion & Publicity –
Tips to get you more
Learn what makes a dynamic press release, the most common
words to avoid, the elements of creating a professional
bio and how to write yours. Know how to time your publicity
and press to coincide with touring and/or a new release.
Kari also explains her guidelines on how to follow up with
media without fear of being a pest, while maximizing your
opportunities for exposure. You’ll gain the knowledge
to construct your own campaign and follow up with confidence.
Imaging and Music
When someone sees your press photo, glances at your poster
or a looks at your CD cover, do they have a good idea in
advance about the music they’re about to hear? You
only have three seconds to make your first impression and
for people to either want to know more about you or move
on. In this hands-on and interactive workshop, participants
may bring in their press kits and records for group evaluation.
We’ll discuss what makes a good promo picture for
your genre or individual style, what your cover art is saying
about your music and whether you send mixed messages in
your graphics or get your potential audience to want to
find out more about you.
Winning Attitudes – Strategies
for Success
Besides knowing the nuts and bolts for making your career
work and planning effectively, Kari is known for her motivational
work with her clients. This workshop sets the environment
for success, helping eliminate hidden fears and obstacles
and replacing them with strategies and attitudes that translate
to success. Knowing what frame of mind to establish before
making that booking call can make the difference between
getting the gig and not, to how much money you make or don’t.
Kari goes over her Top 20 Winning Attitudes for Success,
exploring how to rise above jealousy that’s standing
in your way, how to take breaks for greater working efficiency
and to keep your creativity charged, how to “get over”
writer’s block , get around isolation in your work
and much more.
