Heart of My Own
Deep in the night
Lost and alone
Trying to find my way home
Every step I take
Carries me further away
From a heart of my own
A Heart of My Own

All of these voices
Inside my head
Shouting directions, they worry me so
Til I don’t know what I know
I’m searching high and low
For a Heart of My Own

With a Heart of My Own
With a Heart of My Own
I’d let you love me
I could come home

Now I can’t go forward
And I am not going back
So I will stand here and face this alone
The only wish I made
Over my birthday cake
Is for a heart of my own
A Heart of My Own
A Heart of My Own
I want a Heart of My Own

Eldon Johnson

Eldon Johnson first gained recognition in his country band, True North, but in the last three years Eldon’s own writing/performing career has taken center stage. In 2003 Eldon completed in the Colgate Country Showdown regionals, while in January ’08 Eldon was chosen as one of five national finalists to play the historic Ryman Auditorium.

Stay
As we sit silently, I fear that we have come to disappear
That we’ve become so blind
Two became one, then came undone
The ties that bind have now begun to unwind

A thousand miles between us, or just the useless pride
But, I know we’ll be alright

Stay with me tonight
Stay with me
Stay with me tonight
Stay with me

Do you see now, do you see how, do you see anything at all
From my point of view
You twist your words and twist your hair, and try your hardest not to care
But I still think you do

A million miles between us, or just the useless pride
But, I know we’ll be alright

(Chorus)
I miss you
I need you here
Oh, I feel it inside, we’ll be alright, you’ll be

(OK) with me tonight
Stay with me
Stay with me tonight
Stay with me

Annie & Rod Capps

Dave Siglin, The Ark

In This Town
If I lived in this town I would frequent this café
And that table in the corner would be mine most every day
Eventually, I might even get to know your name
If I lived in this town

If I lived in this town I would get myself a job
Tending bar at Davy’s joint. I like it there. It’s nice and dark.
There’s a chance I will hear you playing your guitar
If I lived in this town

In this town I could be happy in this town I’d make new friends
In this town I could be Isabelle, and I could start all over again

If I lived in this town I would rent the perfect flat
On the top floor of some vintage house, with an English garden round the back
Walking distance everywhere and I might cross your path
If I lived in this town

In this town I could be happy in this town I’d make new friends
In this town I could be Caroline, and I could start all over again

I think I would be safe here
I think maybe I’ll stay here
For a while

If I lived in this town I wouldn’t think about him
Nothing here is anything at all like where I live
And I believe you would treat me better than he did
If I lived in this town

In this town it would be different in this town I’d fall in love
In this town I could be Maryanne, or Caroline, or anyone
and I could start all over again

In This Town

Ben Bedford

Poignant but never sentimental, Ben Bedford's "Land of the Shadows" depicts the brutal 1955 murder of 14 year-old Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi. Like many of Bedford's songs, "Land of the Shadows" is a portrait sketch, portraying both person and era with attention to historical accuracy and its relevance to the human struggle therein. Bedford defined his niche as an American portrait songwriter with his debut release, Lincoln's Man, described by acclaimed songwriter, Diana Jones, as "beautiful and unusual." His second album, due in 2009, will include "Land of the Shadows" among other vignettes.

Land of the Shadows (song for Emmett Till)

Emmett flashed her a smile from across the room
like a sulfur match in the growing gloom
'gainst his smooth brown skin they were shinning white
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

He winked and he whistled and stepped into
the glaring glint of the afternoon
his 14 years of wrong and right
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

Chorus:
Just a Northern boy, didn't mean a thing
only seen Mississippi in magazines
gonna tear his momma's heart apart
in the land of the shadows, light and dark

With his cousins down that dusty road
he didn't think on it, how could he know?
They was just teenage boys seeking girls and fights
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

His granddad stood in his white night gown
in the rough hewn door without a sound
they was two white boys, he wouldn't give no fight
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

(Chorus)

Across the threshold, their plan in gear
they smelled like cigarettes, dry leaves and beer
with a 45 colt and the right of might
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

Pulled by four strong arms from sleep
where he prayed to the lord his soul to keep
to that half ton Chevy on a starry night
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

(Chorus)
[Instrumental break]

The river runs muddy in the summer time
they pulled a rusty wheel from an old turbine
didn't look like nobody in the morning bright
in the land of the shadows, dark and light

Emmett flashed her a smile from across the room
like a sulfur match in the growing gloom
'gainst his smooth brown skin they were shinning white
in the land of the shadows, dark and light
in the land of the shadows, dark and light
in the land of the shadows

Ruth & Max Bloomquist

Ruth & Max Bloomquist’s acoustic Americana is the stuff of rustic romantic dreams. With Ruth’s songwriting and rich alto voice, intertwined with their blend of harmony, guitar, and upright bass, draws the listener into the emotion of each song.

That’s A Game
Love makes the heart beat fast
And sometimes it lasts & lasts
But sometimes it ends
And somebody takes the fall

To some it’s a game they play
The rules change from day to day
Sometimes they win
Sometimes they lose it all

Chorus:
Now Ring-Around-The-Rosie
That’s a game
Nobody’s hurt if you stop
And walk away

Where do the lovers go
Does anyone really know
Who really won
And who got the worst of all

Some have enough to eat
And Some have a place to sleep
But it’s not enough
If you eat and sleep alone

(Chorus)

If love makes a fool of you
And breaks a heart that is true
Time will replace
The pieces you thought were lost

(Chorus)

Helena Nash

Helena evocative voice and shimmering harmonies channels a soulful, modern sound
with an ancient backbone. In “Mama Paris” the listener travels the timeless journey of a mother and her son, Paris, as together they pass through the mother’s dying, celebrating the gifts that live on in the spirit and voice of her son. Harmony by Greg Greer.

Mama Paris
Oh, I love you son
Mmmm, my time has come
It’s not that I’m ready to leave you, son

It’s not that I wish to die
It’s my time to become an angel star
When you need me that angel won’t be far – walk on

The world here is fading for me
All your life my light has shone for thee
Now it’s time to give my light to the sky
Lift your eyes, I’ll sing you a lullaby – walk on

Love me, love me son
Let me go now, go now son
When you look up in the sky at night
Mama Paris will be a shining light – mm hmm

She said listen son, hear what I say
You’ve got a gift to be giving every day
Raise your voice to the heavens and sing
In harmony the universe will ring – will ring (will ring, will ring)

Singing…
Walk on, walk on
Shine on, shine on
Take my love and carry on
Put your voice and your spirit in your song – my son

Now Mama’s silent and her breath grows still
I’m loving her with all my will
In the space she leaves you can hear her voice
As I sing and the air becomes sweet noise

I’m singing…
Walk on, walk on
Shine on, shine on

Oh, Mama Paris, your light lives on
Your voice and your spirit are in my song

I gotta…
Walk on, walk on
Shine on, shine on
Oh, Mama Paris, your light lives on
Your voice and your spirit are in my song – you shine on

David Llewellyn

The passion and grit with which David sings comes directly from his upbringing in the coal-mining valleys of South Wales. Living in the US since 1991 he has honed his singer/songwriter skills, but combine the two and something very special happens. A Kerrville ’07 New Folk winner, David tours both nationally and in the UK and Ireland.

Take Us Down
Take us down my friend, and quickly
Take us down lest we wise up
Take us down to make a living
Count us down, and count us up
Here is my son, who stands beside me
The pride and joy of Mountain Ash
Better hold on tight to my leg boy
This old cage goes down real fast
And I can't believe I ask you
To fill a miner's shoes
They don't make a miner's cap
For one as small as you

And with eyes as big as saucers
You stick out your little chin
And that would fill me up with pride inside
If I didn't feel so ill
Give him chance you ugly bastards
It's his first time, it's his first day
And they all stopped with all their joking
Cause they all started 'xact same way
Heed ye well those sweet gray ponies
Oh, they were once as white as snow
But they've been blinded by the darkness
They'll trample you and never know

Kneel right here, right here beside me
And catch the coal as it come loose
They're only paying for the lumps today
All the small coal ain't no use
And host it up into that hopper
So they can weigh our sweat and blood
Paying pittance for our labour
In this hell hole that we've dug
And let me host you on my shoulders
Cause this old shift is nearly done
And we'll march through town triumphant
But you'll cry when you see mum

You always were a dirty mochyn
But coal, it gets beneath the skin
You can scrub to wash it all away
But that's a battle you won't win
So let me dry you in this towel
And carry you upstairs to bed
Just the way that my dad did for me
And I'll cry like my dad did
Better count those toes and fingers
And take a deep breath while you can
Best forget about that schooling
Cause today, you became a man

But it cuts a deeper sorrow
Starting you off down the mine
Cause it’ll kill you, sooner, later
It just bides it’s own sweet time
So take us down my friend, and quickly
Take us down lest we wise up . . .
Take us down to make a living
Count us down, and count us up

David LaMotte

David creates music that's all-encompassing - from lyrically challenging, high-energy percussive songs in strange alternate tunings to more traditional songs of home, hope and inspiration. He weaves his live performances together in a fabric of vivid - often hilarious - stories, and throws in impressive instrumental pieces along the way.

LaMotte recently announced that he will stop touring at the end of 2008 to devote his primary focus to peacemaking work. He will pursue a Masters in Peace Studies at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia as a Rotary World Peace Fellow, then move into peace work full-time.

Deanna – instrumental

Home
I love to watch you sleeping
See your shoulders rise and fall
I can watch your mind go wandering
til you’re not anywhere at all
I’ll let you slip away now
You’ll find your way back home
I know you know the way, love
So I’ll wait here while you roam

Until you are home, you are home to me
You are home, home to me

I love to watch you waking
Wandering back across the stars
How you curl yourself into me
When you remember where you are
I love your lips for many reasons
I love to hear the things they say
But just for now I love the silence
The words can wait until the day

Because you are home, you are home to me
You are home, home to me

When there are many miles between us
I can’t reach out to touch your hand
And when there’s no one that I love here
I don’t quite understand
In some hotel like any other
When I should feel far away
It’s like you’re sitting here beside me
Like I’m finally home to stay

Because you are home, you are home to me
You are my home, you are home to me

Together with Helen’s crystalline vocals that capture a range of emotions in a single note and their unique melodic crafting, Helene and Michael’s performances and music will call you home.

Ocean Lullaby
Wind on the ocean, the moon in the sky
White sails in the harbor, I'm ready to fly
Dust on my shoes and bag on my back
Step into starlight and never look back

A piece of the puzzle, I search for my place
Grain of sand in the hourglass, whirling in space

Cast off the line now, and push off the shore
The waves that wave to me are calling me home

The boat is my cradle, the stars are my guide
I’m one with the current, I go with the tide
Rocking me gently, I head out to sea
I'm lost and I'm found, I'm alone and I'm free

A speck in the ocean, a part of the plan
As big as the universe, small as a man

Cast off the line now, and push off the shore
The waves that wave to me are calling me home

A piece of the puzzle, I fit in my place
Grain of sand in the hourglass, whirling in space

Cast off the line now, and push off the shore
The waves that wave to me are calling me home

Kevin Danzig

This heartfelt love ballad, co-written with his old band mate, Jim “Raul” Coman, shows Kevin’s true ability to capture an audience with his emotional vocal delivery, playing style and overall energy.

Love Stumbles In

Every now and then
Love stumbles in
Like a drunk into my heart
Leaving me astounded
How the hell is ever found me here
Is never clear

Breaking down my sense of rhythm
Until I lose all track of time
And I’m down upon my knees
Crying baby
Baby, won’t you please
Stay with me a little longer

After love is gone
Time marches on
Like a soldier in my soul
Though I raise my guns and question
Any fools who approach
I’m still the biggest one

Staring in my own production
It seems I was made to play the part
You can see me up on stage
Crying baby
Baby, have a heart
Stay with me a little longer

Every now and then
Love stumbles in
Like a drunk into my heart
Leaving me astounded
How the hell did you ever find me here?
Love…

Eva Hillered

Eva Hillered, a grammy-nominated Swedish singer-songwriter, combines the best of two worlds, American Folk and Swedish folk music. Eva is known as one of the most soulful and personal singers in Sweden. This song is co-written with Dana Cooper and just might become the back-up singer’s anthem!

Back Up Girl
As a little girl
She tried so hard to please them
Singing every note right on key
Trying to be strong
There for everyone in need
Saying you can lean on me

I am your backup girl
Out to save the world
Undiscovered pearl
Your backup girl

She grew up and saw a stranger in the mirror
A young woman she would like to get to know
The pretty little dress didn’t fit her like before
She said I can see I am so much more

Then a backup girl
Part of this world
Not just a string of pearls
More than a backup

Wanna sing every line
Not just the chorus
Stop tiptoeing behind
I wanna be the tallest tree in the forest

I wanna step out in the light
Let me shine
Let me shine

Talitha MacKenzie

Talitha MacKenzie, a World Music artist best known for her Celtic albums Mouth Music, Spiorad and Sòlas, Talitha explores her Scottish-American roots on her latest album Indian Summer (SONAS 006). It is a journey across the Atlantic and back, going from one century to another, through a wide variety of styles and genres. Traditional Native-American and Appalachian music is woven into a tapestry of original songs in English and Gaelic. “Willow” is a healing song of the Chumash Nation (in Santa Barbara, CA). The words make a connection between the parts of the tree (roots, trunk and leaves) and the spiritual attributes of strength, compassion and gentleness.

Willow
Ho neh, Ho neh
Sha lu, Sha lu, Ho ya, Ho ya
He ne ha ya ya ya ho ne
He ne ha ya ya ya ho ne
He ne ha ya ya ya ho ne

The Baal Shem Tones (Helene and Michael Kates)

The Baal Shem Tones, (Helene and Michael Kates), are a dynamic neo-Chassidic husband/wife duo whose songwriting "packs a spiritual punch that stands out from standard musical Jewish fare”. Helene’s sweet, almost other worldly voice, breaks through boundaries, taking you on a journey to a place you have never been before. “When she sings nigunim, you can see the musical notes dancing in the air.” ,

Shalom rav al Yisrael amcha, tasim l’olam
Shalom rav al Yisrael amcha, tasim l’olam
Shalom rav, Shalom rav*

How much longer must we wait,
In a world held down by hate?
We are praying for the day
When we rise above our ways,
And we all can live in peace
