About the 2004 Sampler

This 23-track release represents the majority of musicians that worked with manager/ consultant Kari Estrin in 2004. This first compilation CD includes 21 artists. All of the tracks were culled from the artists’ own recording projects, with the exception of two songs from Montreal-based roots artist Rob Lutes.

On Authentic Voice you’ll hear a wide variety of musical textures, sequenced for listening to from start to finish. Although picking just one track to represent an artist is a challenge, the selections were made to work together as one project. Sometimes a song was specifically chosen from a previous artist’s CD, included because it highlights a particular side to an artist’s performance or writing, or because it features exceptional performance and production.

Whether it’s a track from the popular Appalachian duo, Zoe Speaks, Seattle-based Kathryn Mostow entreating us to remember there’s more to life than our daily routines, Erica Wheeler’s fun and sassy “Hot,” or the Celtic/Medieval harmonies of Mad Agnes, there’s much to discover with these performances. It could be Dana Cooper’s energizing track “Harry Truman Built a Road,” Cosy Sheridan’s soothing voice, thoughtful lyrics and graceful guitar in “The Pomegranate Seed,” Tom Kimmel’s gospel-flavored track “Cryin’ Ground,” or even the pristinely delivered, yet honeyed vocals of Lisa Moscatiello that perhaps will have you searching through your collections for their recent releases.

There’s also a wealth of good writing and artists that may be new to you – Rain Perry’s “Yosemite” won the John Lennon songwriting contest in 2000. Michael Veitch offers political commentary in “In the Sanctuary,” Dale Keys delivers an Americana ballad with “The Leavin’ Train,” Rob Lutes’s stand out performance of “Throw Me From the Train” and his French composition, “Le Jour,” as well as the evocative ballads of David Llewellyn, with “Maybe Tomorrow” and “Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn” (sung partly in Welsh) give you a taste of what’s to come from these artists.

You may already be familiar with Jim Photoglo from Run C & W, doing the exquisite “A Job Well Done.” There’s also the fabulous duet of Tom Prasado-Rao and Cary Cooper a.k.a. The Dreamsicles, the adept guitar and vocals from the Bay area’s Judith-Kate Friedman, and the memorable “Precious Days” from Jenn Adams’s groundbreaking “In The Pool” CD.

Authentic Voice is rounded out with the resophonic guitar instrumental of Chicago-based John Hasbrouck, Kerrville New Folk winner, Nina Adel’s “Footsteps,” Randy Fulk’s “The Last Song” and “And The Spirit Sings” from Santa Cruz-based Ginny Mitchell.

For more information about the artists, the CD booklet lists each artist’s web site, CD, and contact information, so that you may ask for review copies of their entire albums.
